The blossom on our small bechtel crab apple is going off right now, turning the little tree into a frothy pink and white mass.In late October the tight pink buds opened to slightly fragrant double white flowers flushed pale pink on the outside, which closely resemble some of their relations in the rosaceae family.
Bees and hoverflies (more numerous than ever in Melbourne after all the spring rain we’ve had) have visited often.
Despite their negligible fruiting and ubiquity in Melbourne gardens I love these trees. They put in a solid year round performance outside of their extravagant spring blossoming. In autumn their leaves turn iridescent oranges and reds before falling to reveal an almost perfectly symmetrical arrangement of branches in the rounded crown.
